Based from our office near Brussels – Belgium  EnISSA has been providing High Resolution Site Characterization HRSC investigations since 2010 on more than 300 project locations in Europe.

Our team has built up definite expertise in the detection and mapping of soil contamination. To support soil experts and environmental consultants in delivering reliable solutions based on accurate site investigations to their clients, the set of available on site data collection tools is expanding year by year.

The aim of the EnISSA-MIP is to find a better balance between  analytical uncertainty and spatial uncertainty in the conceptual site model by bringing high quality lab detectors to the field. To increase sensitivity and selectivity of the conventional Membrane Interface Probe (MIP) system, the EnISSA method uses a modified GC-MS system which is connected to the MIP. The advantages of using a GC-MS detector, are the low intrinsic detection limits of the detector and the capabilities to measure individual compounds. Field evaluations demonstrated that the EnISSA MIP is capable of  measuring soil profiles for individual compounds with detection limits near 10-20 µg/l. Whether or not in combination with the EnISSA -MIP analysis, also measurements with the Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) or CPT can be offered.

For an HRSC approach on fuel/oil/tar/creosote impacted sites the Optical Image Profiler is a suitable tool to increase data density and decrease uncertainty in the conceptual site model.

With the XRF probe, mine tailings can be characterized in a more detailed and cost efficient way.

Soil gas samples (sub slab, or with soil vapor probes) or ambient/indoor air can be screened or monitored on site with the advanced equipment of our field labs.

iFLUX developed an innovative groundwater monitoring solution to explore speed and direction of pollution flow underground over a certain period. Flux measurements deliver essential information before, during and after the soil contamination management process. Trustworthy flux results provide customers key insights to perform fast and cost-efficient soil remediation.

Trustworthy groundwater monitoring to assess soil contamination is a challenge. Current methods for the determination of movement of pollution in groundwater use no direct measurements but only simulations. This entails large uncertainties which cause remediation failures and higher costs for contaminated site owners. iFLUX introduces a flux sampler that provides direct and accurate measurements of groundwater and pollution movement. This leads to a novel approach of dynamic remediation management in a more cost-effective and faster manner.

iFLUX is a spin-off of the Flemish Research and Technology Organisation (VITO) and the University of Antwerp. For many years dr. Goedele Verreydt managed several research and development projects to create the unique iFLUX technology. Goedele is well-known as international expert in the domain of risk assessment on soil contamination. Together with her research team, they published several relevant scientific publications in the field of study.

iFLUX aims to help safeguard our precious land by envisioning the dynamics of the earth’s subsurface. Our innovative solutions deliver flux measurement results to environmental consultants and authorities, by guaranteing them more accurate and thrustworthy information to draw the right conclusions and perform the most cost-efficient actions.

Injectis is a young company specialized in high quality direct injections of reagents for in-situ soil and groundwater remediation. For this purpose, Injectis has developed the patented Spin® injection technology especially designed to overcome some of the limitations encountered with conventional direct injection technologies. The principal characteristic of the Spin® injection technology is that it avoids soil compaction and soil smearing at the point of injection. As a consequence, lower injection pressures can be applied and significantly higher injection flow rates can be achieved without unwanted fracturing to occur. Moreover, hammering, which could create a preferential flow path along the injection rods, is not being used to drill to the desired injection depth. As a result, there is a high degree of certainty that the product is being injected at the desired depth and in the targeted soil layer. The Spin® injection technology is very effective in low permeability and heterogeneous soils what has been proven in multiple projects. This innovative technology has extensively been tested during the last 2 years and has been used to inject different types of reagents on different sites and in different soil types. Testing has revealed that injection fluids can be injected at lower pressures avoiding short circuiting, even for shallow applications. Success has been achieved at several sites where direct push injections have failed. During the last year, the system has been further developed to allow injections in and under gravel and sandstone layers; the Gravel-SpinTM.

Kruger is the leading provider of in-situ thermal remediation of contaminated land.

A matter of clean soil

Our benchmark is clean soil. This means that we focus on what is left in the soil after the remedy - not just the mass of contamination removed. On our projects the post-treatment concentrations in the soil are generally less than 0,1% of the initial contamination, making it possible to safely reuse the soil for any purposes. The treatment is effective for a very broad range of contaminants and in all types of geology.

Transparency in all project phases

To perform powerful thermal remedies in sensitive areas we have the absolute safe and sound technology, the experienced team and strict QA procedures. But it is crucial for us that our customers also feel confident through all the project phases. That is why we provide a unique opportunity to follow the remediation progress online at any time. As our customer, you are always able to check temperatures, mass balance, daily sample results and much more.

A strong team you can trust

Krüger’s in-depth expertise, transparency and commitment, keep customers around the world coming back and feeling confident. During the past 12 years, our team has performed thermal remediation projects in Denmark, Sweden, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Vietnam in full compliance with remedial goals, timely manner, budget and safety. We do believe that trust and transparency is the key to every successful project.

Network for Industrially Co-ordinated Sustainable Land Management in Europe (NICOLE) is considered as the principal forum that European industry uses to develop and influence the technical state of the art in contaminated land management in Europe. This is done in good co-operation with leading service providers and academia. NICOLE’s goal is to enable European industry to identify,

assess, and manage industrially contaminated land efficiently, cost effectively and within a framework of sustainability.

At this point NICOLE comes into play, eager to share examples of sustainable practices. Within NICOLE

we regularly ask ourselves questions like: “How can industry contribute even better to sustainable land management”? And: How to apply land stewardship in practice”? Given the many societal challenges facing us, the answer is not always simple or straightforward, and a challenge in itself. It requires regular discussions with local or regional authorities and other stake- holders. It’s about converting the societal demands for industrial products and services to societal benefits in the broadest sense. After all we owe it to the communities that we operate. Giving something back to society and nature seems natural.

Our industrial members, supported by the service providers and the academic members, are committed to create value by connecting industrial land management to societal, ecological and economic challenges.
